ARABIC MUSIC PROGRAM
Arabic Music Program at ACCC Spring 2008


Join the Arab Cultural and Community Center and local performer, teacher and music scholar Saed Muhssin (www.saedmuhssin.com) in this very special 8 week series. Both classes meet at the ACCC, 2 Plaza Street in San Francisco. The goal of the Arabic Music Program is to share the beauty of Arabic music with the larger Bay Area community and also connect the Arab-American community with their heritage.


Arabic Music Appreciation
8 meetings, March 1- April 19. Saturdays, 10:30 am-12:30 pm
(No prior musical training required)
$200 for session including materials

This workshop is the ideal introduction for anyone interested in becoming familiar with Arabic music. This historical and cultural overview includes structural and melodic characteristics of Arabic music, regional styles, major artists and composers, and much more. Examples will be played and discussed, and historic and social context provided to facilitate a deeper listening experience. For more detailed information about the course call 415-664-2200.



Arabic Music Theory, Ear Training, and Analysis 1
8 meetings, March 1- April 19, Saturdays, 1:00-3:00
(For musicians trained in any style)
$200 for session including materials

This is a hands-on class that introduces musicians to the Arabic tonal system, maqam theory, and rhythms. The class also provides ear training in maqam recognition. An approach to analyzing Arabic music in terms of form, tonal content and progression is taught, allowing students the ability to grow through listening to Arabic music on their own.

About the Instructor:
Arab musician Saed Muhssin is a oud performer, teacher and music scholar. Saed has performed widely both as a soloist, and with other groups inluding as musical director of Al-Marjanah ensemble, the Saed Muhssin trio and Aswat Arabic choir. Most recently he has founded the Arabic Orchestra of San Francisco. As a scholar, Saed has studied Arabic music theory and oud performance for the past twenty years and is completing a book on maqam intonation. Saed gives classes and lecture demos in many universities, colleges and cultural institutions as well as teaching music privately in his San Francisco studio.
