Arabic Cooking & Baking

In this series, participants will be invited on a hands-on culinary journey through the Arab world, discovering the history, culture, and science behind some of the Arab world's most essential dishes and seizing the opportunity to produce them with your own hands. Taking us from the Gulf, to North Africa, to the Levant, in this session, participants will explore the diverse legendary cuisines of Yemen, Tunisia, and Lebanon.

Sambusa: The Flavors of Yemen Part I

In this class, participants will learn how to make an essential Yemeni appetizer: the Yemeni sambusa, or samosa, a delicious savory pastry filled with vegetables and/or ground beef and accompanied by flavorful chutneys. Sambusas make the perfect party appetizer or a delicious snack for yourself and the whole family. Learn how to make these scrumptious doughy pastries with hands-on guidance from Yemeni instructor Hanan Albar!

Khobz Mlawah Pan-Fried Bread: The Flavors of Yemen Part III

In this class, participants will learn how to make khobz mlawah, a delicious Yemeni pan-fried bread served with honey and/or dates. Sink your hands into this baking class with direction from Yemeni instructor Hanan Albar. Caution: this tasty bread is highly addictive!

Tableh Drumming

In this class, students will learn about the history, evolution, and significance of tableh drumming in Arabic music and be trained on the techniques of playing the tableh, or derbakeh, drum - the heartbeat and rhythm of Arabic music across the Arab world. What better a skill than to pull out a tableh and beat out body-moving rhythms at gatherings, parties, weddings and more! Beginners and all ages are welcome! A limited number of instruments is available; participants are encouraged to bring their own.

Dabkeh

For those who have always wanted to learn the steps of the popular and folkloric dance of the Arab Levant - this class is for you! Join our dabkeh class series to learn about the history, origins, and cultural significance of the dabkeh and learn basic steps and choreography so you'll be ready to join in at the next wedding or cultural event.

In this class series, children and youth will learn about the history, origins, and cultural significance of the popular and folkloric dance of the Arab Levant - the dabkeh - and practice the basic steps and choreography!

The Arabic for Children class series is designed to offer Arabic language instruction to all children ages 5-14 wishing to increase their connection to and/or understanding of Arab culture and identity through learning the Arabic language. The dynamic and interactive course curriculum uses a mix of Modern Standard speaking, reading and writing. All levels welcome.

Arabic for Adults

The Adult Arabic class series is designed to offer Arabic language instruction to all community members wishing to increase their connection to and/or understanding of Arab culture and identity through learning the Arabic language. The dynamic and interactive course curriculum will use a mix of classical reading and writing in addition to colloquial and modern standard speaking.  Level I is designed for beginning-level students with little to no knowledge of Arabic. Level II is designed for intermediate-level students with elementary Arabic reading, writing, and/or speaking skills.
Ages: 15+
